The coolest part of what I do is seeing the transformation in patients. It’s why I became a plastic surgeon. I have a genuine belief that helping others reach their greatest self-esteem is the ultimate reward. Being a plastic surgery doctor is so much more than moulding the anatomy of the body – we have a unique opportunity to help them achieve something far deeper than physical. We’re moulding people’s self-esteem.

In addition to being a co-founder of H/K/B Cosmetic Surgery, Dr. Kortesis mentors medical students and residents from UNC and Wake Forest, and teaches fellows from the UNC Plastic Surgery Department. He also lectures at local, regional and national American Society of Plastic Surgeons meetings.

Dr. Kortesis’ passion for giving back has taken him on mission trips to Bolivia with the Partners of the Americas to aid pediatric burn victims. Dr. Kortesis is a competitive marathoner, half-marathon tri-athlete and adventure sports enthusiast who believes in the power of overall wellness. He and his wife are also active members of the Greek Church and enjoy sharing their time with the local Greek community.

I’ve been a basketball fan for as long as I can remember. First MJ, then Kobe. I’ve always been drawn to people who push themselves, work hard, and somehow find a way to do what others said couldn’t be done. My dad and I shared that passion, and now I get to watch my own child experience that same love for the game.

That changed something for me. I started thinking about how many kids have the talent and the drive, but simply don’t have access to the same opportunities. And I kept asking myself, What can I do about that?

Basketball became my answer. Creating a place where kids can train, learn, find mentors, build confidence, and simply have someone believe in them has become one of the most meaningful things I’ve ever been a part of.

What does a surgery day look like for me?

It starts well before the first incision.

I’ve always believed surgery is a lot like sports. You don’t step onto the field without a game plan, and you don’t step into the operating room without one either.

Weeks before a procedure, I’m studying the details, creating a plan, and preparing for every possibility so I can walk into the operating room with confidence, focus, and a commitment to giving every patient my very best.

The best part of my job has always been the relationships I build with my patients. Watching their confidence grow, following them through their journey, and simply catching up about life during follow-up visits is what makes this career so rewarding. The hardest part is when I know I can't safely give someone the result they're hoping for, but putting my patients' well-being first will always be more important than saying yes. I truly can't imagine a more fulfilling profession.

Significant weight loss can be life-changing, but it can also lead to unwanted volume loss in the face, making you look older than you feel. Restoring that lost volume is often the key to achieving a healthy, refreshed appearance. Depending on your anatomy, I may recommend fat grafting using your own tissue or fillers if you don't have enough available fat, creating a treatment plan that's tailored to you.
