Collagen Stimulating Fillers
As we age, our bodies produce less and less collagen. In addition, we also experience facial bone loss which can make the structural framework of the face begin to weaken and lose shape and contour. The result of these aging factors is sagging of the overlying soft tissue and skin, causing folds, lines, wrinkles and concerns such as jowling. Thanks to advancements in injectables, we now have a solution to these common aging problems: injectable collagen stimulating fillers.
By stimulating our bodies ability to produce and replace lost collagen, we can reverse the signs of aging in the face by improving overall facial structure. Collagen stimulating fillers are different from dermal fillers in a few ways. Dermal fillers volumize the face immediately by “filling in” lines, creases, and tissues with hyaluronic acid gel.
You can immediately enhance the areas such as lips, cheeks, and nasolabial folds with results lasting between 6-12 months. They are easily reversed if you have an adverse reaction or asymmetrical result, and give patients a sense of immediate satisfaction.
On the other hand, biostimulating fillers such as Radiesse® filler (with calcium hydroxylapatite) or Sculptra™Aesthetics (with poly-L-lactic acid) stimulate collagen production over time, creating a gradual improvement in facial volumization and even enhancing skin quality. Furthermore, it’s important to note that dermal fillers do not stimulate the production of collagen.
Collagen stimulating fillers are great for restoring volume to large areas of the face versus specific areas that might need targeted enhancement – some commonly treated areas are the mid-face, the cheeks and temple, and even the jawline and neck.
Why is collagen loss important? Collagen gives our skin “snap,” structure and support, especially against aging and wrinkling. And although it may be subtle, bone structure loss is important too – it can be a big contributor to an aging appearance because it’s the framework for the fat, collagen, and skin of our faces. When collagen and bone structure start to diminish, the once youthful areas of our face can look much older than they really are.
Collagen stimulating fillers can help rebuild the collagen matrix, helping your body create its own natural tissues.
Sculptra® is an FDA approved injectable collagen stimulating filler used to treat wrinkles and deep nasolabial folds. This non-surgical treatment contains poly-L- lactic acid which is used in multiple treatments to replace lost collagen. Sculptra injections work gradually and overtime restores volume to your face leaving you with a youthful looking appearance. The results of Sculptra injections and treatment can last up to two years.
Are you in a fight with the aging process? Do you look older than you feel? Do you want to age gracefully? Have you heard of Radiesse?
Radiesse is a biocompatible collagen stimulating filler that reduces the appearance of wrinkles, lines, and skin folds around the mouth and nose.
It is also popular for its long-lasting benefits that could be for two years or more.
When is Radiesse Right?
Radiesse filler is popular with our Charlotte patients between 35 and 60 years of age who are looking for quick results without surgery. The Radiesse procedure provides up to 80% improvement immediately, but since the results are temporary, repeated treatments are necessary to maintain the desired outcomes.
Some of our patients use Radiesse as an anti-aging regiment until they feel a surgical option becomes appropriate. You can discuss this strategy with us during your consultation.
Initial Consultation for Radiesse Filler

The Radiesse Filler Procedure
We perform Radiesse procedures with local anesthesia in our Huntersville and Southpark locations. The Radiesse treatment takes about 15 minutes with only mild discomfort from the injection. You can return home right after the procedure.
Our experienced and highly trained certified injector will deliver Radiesse, an organic compound gel containing carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, glycerin, and sterile water to the treatment area. Here is a brief review of the process:
- First Step: Your injector will select one or more Radiesse injection points for each location treated, and apply an antiseptic.
- Second Step: Your injector will calculate the correct amount of Radiesse for the treatment.
- Third Step: Your injector will deliver the Radiesse filler under the skin, beneath the dermis and subcutaneous layer.
You will notice immediate results right after the Radiesse procedure and full results within one week. Outcomes can last for two years or more and touchups are possible as necessary.
You can expect minimal swelling which should subside within 36 hours. There may also be minimal discomfort and bruising which we can manage with medication and cold compresses. You can resume normal activities immediately after treatment.
