No one wants “wings” under the upper arms. Particularly for women, skin laxity on the arms is a distressing part of the aging process, causing them to hide their arms under long sleeves even when the weather is hot. For people of both sexes who lose a substantial amount of weight, this sagging skin can be embarrassing and unsightly.
A brachioplasty or arm lift is an exciting procedure that dramatically improves the shape and contour of the arms.
It is often performed on people after massive weight loss or bariatric surgery but is also effective on anyone who feels their upper arms have become uncomfortably flaccid.
Drs. Hunstad, Kortesis and Bharti have provided successful arm lifts for many patients, making it possible for them to wear sleeveless and short-sleeved shirts once again with scars hidden under the arms.
What can an arm lift do for me?
An arm lift can restore a trim, taut, youthful contour to the upper arms.
What can I expect during an arm lift?
An arm lift can usually be performed on an outpatient basis using general anesthesia or a local anesthetic and sedation at our fully accredited surgical facility on our beautiful campus, where our highly qualified nurses will pamper you. Our nurses are certified in advanced cardiac life support, which ensures the highest level of supervision, evaluation, and care in the unlikely event of an emergency. We also work with board-certified anesthesiologists.
The surgical procedure can be completed in about 1-3 hours depending on the amount of tissue to be removed and the overall length of the incision. The incisions run on the under-side of the arms where scars can be seen only if the arms are lifted then liposuction is used to remove any excess fat and excess skin is trimmed.
Dissolvable sutures are used to close the incisions so that no stitches have to be removed. These sutures also minimize scarring.
How long does it take to recover from an arm lift?
The recovery time from an arm lift is 1-2 weeks, and strenuous activity should be avoided for 4-6 weeks. We recommend Ace bandage wraps be worn for 24 hours and to keep arms elevated to reduce swelling.
You can expect some bruising, soreness, and swelling after your surgery, but these symptoms can be reduced with pain medication and ice packs.
Of course, we will monitor your progress and answer any questions you have while you heal.
How long does an arm lift last?
While sagging of the skin of the upper arm can recur as part of the natural aging process or in the event of significant weight loss, the results of an upper arm lift are long lasting.
