What Can a Breast Reduction Do for Me?
A breast reduction will provide you with smaller breasts in a size you prefer

Heavy breasts can be quite a burden for women, causing back and shoulder pain, as well as inhibiting their ability to dance, play sports, or even just play with their kids. Large breasts can also make some women feel self-conscious and make shopping for clothes a very real problem. And, in some instances, oversized breasts may also lead to skin problems, including irritation on the underside of the breast. For women struggling with any of these problems, breast reduction might be the answer.

At H/K/B Cosmetic Surgery, we understand that deciding to reduce the size of your breasts is not to be taken lightly. You need to feel 100 percent confident that your surgeon has the skill and expertise to take good care of you. We are known experts in all types of breast surgery, and our fully accredited surgical facility designed specifically to help you relax and feel comfortable.

Our nurses are certified in advanced cardiac life support, and we use advanced anesthesia providers to ensure that your well-being is a top priority. We believe that our patients deserve nothing less than the best.

Additionally, we provide patients with a wealth of before and after photos of patients just like them, so women can see what their outcome may look like. This is an excellent way for women to visualize their potential outcome and open communication with the surgeon to discuss what kind of expectations the patient has for their procedure.

If you’ve thought about breast reduction, or wonder whether you might be a good candidate, we welcome you to contact us to schedule an appointment. In the meantime, here’s some information about choosing breast reduction.

Considering a Breast Reduction?

A few reasons to consider getting a breast reduction surgery include:

  • Due to the size of your breasts, you experience chronic pain in the back, shoulders, or neck; even following medication, physical therapy, or massage, this pain persists.
  • You simply don’t like the appearance of your breasts, and wish they looked more proportional to the rest of your body.
  • You have deep lines or permanent indentions in your shoulders, due to the pressure of your bra straps.
  • You have a restricted ability to be active, and find it difficult to run, jump, or engage in other forms of aerobic exercise.
  • You struggle with regular skin problems, including yeast or fungal infections under your breast fold, requiring the use of topical interventions.
  • You notice that the skin on your breasts appears visibly stretched, scarred, or worn.
  • You have a low breast profile, with your nipples resting on the underside of the breast fold.
  • You have an enlarged areola complex, caused by sagging and stretched skin.
  • You have an asymmetry between your breasts, and want to bring them into greater harmony and proportionality.

It’s important to emphasize that, while there are many serious medical reasons to consider breast reduction, some patients choose to have their breasts augmented for purely aesthetic reasons. If you just don’t like the appearance of your breasts, or if you have a hard time finding clothing or undergarments that fit you properly, breast reduction surgery may be the best way forward.

What can I expect during a breast reduction?

Breast reduction is an outpatient procedure that is performed under general anesthesia. Most of these surgeries require two to three hours to complete.

Every breast reduction procedure is customized and depends on your anatomy and the outcome you want. Usually, three incisions are made: one around the areola, another vertically from the bottom edge of the areola to the crease underneath the breast, and the third horizontally beneath the breast in the natural curve of the crease. Our surgeons are exceptionally skilled at keeping scars to a minimum, and often they can be hidden in breast creases in such a way as to be virtually invisible. We also offer scar therapy and scar management for those patients who have a history of poor scarring.

Excess skin and fat are removed, and the remaining tissue is reshaped into a new, lifted breast position. The nipple and areola are shifted to a higher position to accommodate the smaller size of your breasts. If the areola is too large for the smaller breast size, they can also be reduced in size for a more balanced look. Liposuction is also sometimes used to sculpt and shape the breasts – especially the sides – into a pleasing shape.

Because the nipples and areolas remain attached to the underlying tissues (similar to a button moved to a higher buttonhole), sensation is usually preserved, and you should even be able to breastfeed after a breast reduction.

How long does it take to recover from breast reduction surgery?

You may be required to wear an elastic bandage or surgical bra for a period of time during your recovery period. We will monitor your progress and provide you with detailed instructions to speed your healing as much as possible.

Bruising, soreness, and swelling are normal after a breast reduction, but they usually subside quickly. The swelling will be the last after-effect to resolve. While your breasts will, of course, be immediately smaller, the final shape will not fully “settle” for about six months.

Most women take one or two weeks off from work, and you will need to sleep on your back for a short time. You should also avoid strenuous exercise and heavy lifting for a few weeks. Your provider will give you more specific advice and restrictions for your recovery, and also answer any questions you might have about the recovery process. Also note that your surgeon can provide medication to help manage pain, as needed.

Are You a Good Candidate for Breast Reduction?

As you consider whether you’re eligible to have a breast reduction surgery at H/K/B Cosmetic Surgery, it’s important to think not just about your cosmetic goals, but also your overall health and safety.

Generally, our surgeons will recommend breast reduction for patients who meet the following qualifications:

  • Their breasts are fully developed.
  • They are not pregnant, they are not planning on getting pregnant, and they are not currently breastfeeding.
  • They do not smoke.
  • They are in good health, and don’t have any medical conditions that would inhibit their ability to heal.
  • They have reasonable expectations for their surgery, and understand that it’s about making improvements, not necessarily achieving perfection.

For women who meet these qualifications, breast reduction surgery may be a good, safe option. If you have any additional questions about your eligibility, reach out to H/K/B Cosmetic Surgery at any time.

Preparing for Breast Reduction Surgery

Think you’re ready to take the first steps toward a breast reduction surgery? To begin with, reach out to H/K/B Cosmetic Surgery to set up an appointment. During your consultation, we’ll chat with you about the process, answer any questions you might have, and use our imaging equipment to show you what your results may look like. This consultation allows us to qualify you for surgery, and also to ensure we’re on the same page about the expectations you have.

During the consultation, your surgeon will evaluate your medical history, and in some cases may even recommend getting some lab work done to ensure that you’re a good candidate for a safe, low-risk procedure.

Your surgeon will also instruct you on any lifestyle changes that should be made in advance of the surgery. For example, you’ll be asked to stop smoking, and also to abstain from using certain over-the-counter medications, such as aspirin and other anti-inflammatory drugs, which may cause excessive bleeding.

Another important aspect of the consultation: Your surgeon will let you know what you need to do on the day of the surgery, and also set some of the parameters for your recovery. This can help you plan ahead and ensure you have the help you need during your post-operative downtime.
