No man wants to have to explain why he would rather not go to the beach or remove his shirt in the gym locker room, but that’s what gynecomastia – enlarged male breasts – causes many men to do. Luckily, male breast reduction or chest reduction surgery can correct gynecomastia and restore a masculine-looking chest.
When done with skill and experience, scars are kept to a minimum, and the recovery period is less painful. No two cases are the same, however, and a great deal depends on the amount of tissue that needs to be removed in order to create a flatter chest.
Drs. Hunstad, Kortesis, and Bharti have assisted many patients in the successful treatment of gynecomastia. If you are overweight, you are advised to attempt weight loss first. Sometimes, this resolves gynecomastia without surgery, and weight loss after surgery can cause a recurrence of the condition.
What can male breast reduction do for me?
Male breast reduction surgery for gynecomastia can remove enlarged male breasts and restore a tight, flat, masculine appearance to the chest.
What can I expect during surgery for gynecomastia?
Male breast reduction can usually be performed on an outpatient basis using general anesthesia or local anesthesia with sedation at our fully accredited surgical facility on our beautiful campus, where our highly qualified nurses will pamper you. Our nurses are certified in advanced cardiac life support, which ensures the highest level of supervision, evaluation, and care in the unlikely event of an emergency. We also work with board-certified anesthesiologists.
In most cases, we are able to make the incisions under the arms or along the edges of the areola (the dark area around the nipple) where the scars will be inconspicuous.
If excess glandular tissue is the primary cause of the breast enlargement, the tissue will be excised. Liposuction is usually performed as well to remove fatty tissue to create a flat chest. Smartlipo is also performed to tighten the skin.
In cases where large amounts of fat or glandular tissue have been removed, the skin may not adjust well to the new, smaller breast contour. In these cases, excess skin may have to be trimmed to allow the remaining skin to firmly readjust to the new contour. This skin trim is typically done as a second procedure, as it is often not necessary.
How long does it take to recover from male breast reduction?
The recovery time is a few days to 2 weeks depending on the extent of your surgery. Strenuous activity should be avoided for about 4 weeks.
We will give you a compression garment to wear for a few weeks to reduce swelling. Expect some swelling and bruising during the recovery period, and any post-operative pain can be controlled with medication and ice packs.
Of course, we will monitor your progress and answer any questions you have while you heal.
How long does male breast reduction last?
Gynecomastia can recur, but if you avoid substantial weight gain, your surgery should be long lasting.
