Skip the beach vacation this summer and discover a better body instead. Many of our patients choose to use their summer vacation for plastic surgery recovery. Come in for breast augmentation or a tummy tuck now and you’ll be able to enjoy your new body for years to come. Bikini body, here I come!

Summer is an excellent time for breast augmentation, tummy tuck surgery, and other procedures, but the warmer weather does pose some unique challenges, especially during recovery. This guide will help you successfully recover from your summertime plastic surgery.

Don’t Overschedule

We love busy summers full of beach trips, sightseeing, and cherry picking, but if you’re planning plastic surgery, plan on taking things easy this year. You’ll need time to recover, give yourself at least two weeks off from work after surgery. Most patients are back to their regular activities within six weeks of their surgery.

This doesn’t mean you can’t have any fun this summer. Many patients choose to recover from surgery during a relaxing staycation. Plan fun, but keep in mind your limitations as you recover.

Stay Out of the Sun

Sun protection is important every summer, but even more so after plastic surgery. Many patients are much more susceptible to sunburn after plastic surgery. Incisions can take several months to fully mature which means sun exposure on a new incision can lead to darkening, a condition that is often long lasting. This summer, stay out of the sun as much as possible. When you do need to go outside, cover up and use sunscreen.

No Swimming!

Pools, lakes, spas, and oceans should be avoided after plastic surgery until you’ve been cleared by your surgeon. These sitting bodies of water often harbor pathogens and can increase your risk for infection after surgery. Skipping the pool can be one of the most difficult parts of a summertime plastic surgery recovery, but the results are certainly worth it.

Drink Plenty of Water

Proper hydration before and after surgery can speed your healing and help you to feel better sooner. Surgery can be dehydrating so make sure to drink plenty of water every day and on especially hot days, you may need additional water.  Stock up on your favorite non-alcoholic beverages before surgery and always drink a lot of water.

Keep Cool

Warmer summer weather can make the extra layers you’ll need (bandaging, compression garments, etc.) after surgery uncomfortable. Beat the heat by staying indoors and using temperature control systems. Yes, it can be more uncomfortable to recover during hot weather, but with modern technology, you shouldn’t have to experience much extra heat at all. Stay cool this summer!
