Tummy Tuck Recovery- What You Need to Know

Is your tummy flat? After a tummy tuck it certainly will be. This procedure restores a flatter, tighter appearance to the abdomen. Get rid of belly fat, say goodbye to stretched-out abdominal skin, and love the way you look in a bikini again.

Many of our tummy tuck patients are excited for their results, but a bit nervous about the recovery period. This guide will help you to prepare for your recovery process. A flatter tummy is just a few weeks away!

What Is a Tummy Tuck?

Understanding what a tummy tuck is will help you better prepare for some of the things you will experience during recovery. A tummy tuck, also called abdominoplasty, is a surgical procedure that corrects excess skin and fat on the abdomen and stretched-out abdominal muscles. During the surgery an incision is made across the lower abdomen, underneath the bikini line, but generally extending from hip to hip. Excess skin is removed, the belly button is repositioned (if needed), and the muscles are tightened and stitched together. Liposuction is performed on the entire area to suction out any fatty tissue. Some patients may require an addition of mesh to reinforce the stomach muscles. This isn’t common, and typically occurs in patients with damage or abnormalities to the abdominal muscles. The end result is a flatter, tighter abdomen.

As our own Dr. Bharti has said of the procedure, “An abdominoplasty can give you the midsection that you desire by removing excess skin and fat, tightening your six pack muscles, reshaping your belly button, and contouring your flanks with liposuction.”

How Soon Will I Return Home After an Abdominoplasty?

Many patients return home the same day as their abdominoplasty. You will need someone to drive you and remain with you. Choose someone you trust as you will need a great deal of help getting around. Some patients have a difficult time standing up right after surgery.

What Should I Expect During the Recovery Period?

Expect to be swollen and sore, especially for the first few days. We’ll provide pain medication to ease your discomfort. Rest is important and helps your body to heal. We also encourage gentle walking as soon as you’re able. You should feel a little better each day until you’re fully recovered.

How Long Until I Can Return to Work After My Abdominoplasty?

You can return to work as soon as you feel up to it, but this varies substantially from patient to patient. Some are back to work in about a week while others require three weeks or more before they are comfortable enough to go to work. We can give you an estimated recovery time based on the extent of your surgery. Give yourself more time than you think you’ll need. Don’t rush your recovery.
